Wood-Fired Ceramics refers to a unique firing process typically done with a group of potters working together to fire an outdoor kiln that is fueled by wood instead of electricity. The pots get direct contact with the ash and fire that comes through the entire kiln and out the chimney.
I have the pleasure of participating in this process twice a year with a local Michigan potter who has one of these kilns in her backyard. A small group of us stack our pieces in the kiln and then spend about 24 hours straight together building the fire in the kiln and getting it up to the almost 2,400 degrees necessary to fire the pieces.
The direct contact with ash and fire creates very organic results on the pieces.
